Donkey Fire

A Sad Day.

So far, it’s been a sad day in Beijing (not helped by shitty, rainy, cold weather). The other day I watched and reviewed 'Restrepo', an incredible war documentary set in Afghanistan. Well, this morning I woke to the news that the (incredibly brave and talented) co-director, Tim Hetherington, has been killed in Libya, covering the rebels conflict with Gaddafi. Pulizter Prize nominated Getty Images photographer Chris Hondros was also killed.

The quotes from peers of Hetherington’s are incredibly moving:

"Hetherington was one of those rare people you meet who are not only admirably heroic, but good to the bone. He was handsome, alive, charming, sharp, and dedicated to his work, which involved putting himself in the front lines of danger."

Another quote, from ABC News’ James Goldston, shows how brave and dedicated Hetherington was:

“During his shooting for the Nightline specials he very seriously broke his leg on a night march out of a very isolated forward operating base that was under attack. He had the strength and character to walk for four hours through the night on his shattered ankle without complaint and under fire, enabling that whole team to reach safety.”

A sad day, and a true loss.
